Ode to a Dead Lord: A Journey to the North York Moors
Whitby
When I first arrived in the northern sea-faring town of Whitby, in June of 2010, I was momentarily confused. The sun was shining in a nearly cloudless sky. Pleasure boats were peacefully sailing in a sea that was a brilliant sapphire blue. Was this really England, and northern England at that?
The answer, of course, is that this was England. But as a resident of the area cheerfully told me later, "We'll pay for all this sunshine in a few days."
I therefore enjoyed the sunshine while it lasted by strolling through the picturesque streets of old Whitby, walking along the cliffs and, of course, visiting the ruins of Whitby Abbey - where a key scene in Ode to a Dead Lord is set.
